Year 13

It is hoped that by the time students return from their summer break that many, if not most, have made a start on their university choices and started to refine their personal statement.  However, many students still feel confused and undecided about their future life after school.  This is quite normal. Staff are on hand to advise and guide applicants through the intricacies of UCAS and other applications. Some opt to take a Gap Year and are encouraged to plan this carefully so that it is relevant as well as fun.  Specialist help is available within the Careers Department and from subject tutors for applications to Oxbridge, Medicine, Veterinary and Dental courses, Law and joining the Armed Services. Subject teachers are always on hand to discuss courses and career options, from art and drama schools to engineering, surveying and accountancy options.

Oxbridge, Durham and Russell Group Universities

Students who are identified as having the potential to gain places at top universities benefit from a range of guidance and advice. Opportunities to strengthen individual applications include: mentoring, taking the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification), attending Headmaster’s Lectures and talks by visiting speakers and joining relevant societies and clubs such as The Poetry Society, Young Engineers, the Senior Maths Club and The Aquinas Society. Departments offer targeted support such as extra classes, interview practice, preparation for admissions tests and the taking of extra modules where appropriate.  Oxbridge applications are co-ordinated  by Mr Bill Lofthouse, Head of Sixth Form.

Overseas Study

A minority of students may be interested in attending universities in the US, Canada, Europe or elsewhere. The school gives support and assistance with teacher recommendations, although we do not provide SAT tuition. Trinity College Dublin, in particular, has been popular with Ampleforth students in recent years.
