The Scholars' Group

The aim of the scholars’ group is to encourage academic endeavour wherever possible and for such endeavour to be valued as a pursuit in its own right. The majority of students who form the scholars’ group are academic award holders but it is not exclusive and other students who would benefit are included. The Head of Academic Scholars is responsible for keeping an overview of the progress of all academic scholars. This allows for continuity of oversight as well as a frame of reference grounded solely on the achievements and capabilities of the scholars’ group. All of this requires close co-ordination between Heads of Department, House tutorial teams and the Head of Academic Scholars.

We have a programme of evening activities which aims to challenge and deepen the academic knowledge of our Scholars. Activities will be from across the full spectrum of academic subjects, with content not constrained by public examination considerations.

We hope to encourage debate, the ability to think laterally and creatively and develop other higher order thinking skills. Many of the activities will encourage the participants to work cooperatively with scholars from other year groups.

In addition, individual tutorial meetings and group meetings are arranged whenever the need arises, such meetings also provide a vehicle to allow option choices at GCSE and AS level to be discussed.

The Head of Academic Scholars is Dr Jane Weston in the Mathematics department. She can be contacted via email at jmaw@ampleforth.org.uk.
