Concert Choir

The Ampleforth & Ryedale Concert Choir comprises members of the Schola Cantorum and Schola Puellarum, and other members of the local community are warmly invited to participate. It gives a performance once every summer term.

Past Events

The choir's first event was in May 2005 when they gave a performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria and Britten’s St Nicolas Cantata in the Abbey with Anthony Osborne (J97) singing the tenor solo part of Nicolas. The choir was joined by the Girls’ Choir of Cardinal Heenan High School, Leeds, and was accompanied by the Pro Musica.

In June 2006 the choir, again joined by pupils from Cardinal Heenan High School, performed Mozart's Missa brevis et Solemnis with Diane Peacock, Kate Morgan, Matthew Long and James Arthur (D98) singing the solos (see picture).  The orchestra, consisting of members of Ampleforth College staff, guests from the Hallé and Opera North orchestras, and some local players, then played Barber's Adagio for Strings.  This was followed by Duruflé's Requiem with Sarah Griffiths (A06) singing the solo.

In 2007 the choir gave a concert of 20th century choral music, including Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb and Bernstein's Chichester Psalms.  As well as our guest adult singers, students from Lady Lumley's School in Pickering took part.
