Chess
We may fairly say that in beauty, depth, harmony and variety the combinations of the chess board approach as near perfection as anything which the human intellect has conceived.' (Samuel Boden, 1859)
Chess is once again a flourishing activity at Ampleforth. In many houses chess sets are out and in frequent use. Chess can be taken as an official activity on one evening each week, when players receive instruction and advice, and can be paired with an opponent of similar strength.
The students enter the UK Land Challenge, a Nationwide competition with 60,000 competitors and there is also an exciting inter-house competition that the students compete in.
