Land Rover Restoration Project
A group of students have begun the exciting task of restoring an old Series IIa Land Rover. The petrol engined, short wheel base vehicle is in need of a new chassis and so will need completely stripping down. They will learn how a 'proper' vehicle works and gain an understanding of home engineering. The group will meet a number of times a week and the personnel will vary from time to time to include the greatest possible number of students during the course of the project. |
| The students soon got to work removing the hard top and bonnet. They have also fitted a new carburettor, ignition coil and refitted the old clutch. Once the engine has been tested the rest of the body can come off and the real fun can start! 'Lucy', as she has become known, is now looking a little bare. Her engine has had a number of new parts and her body work is being taken back to bare metal and then resprayed. |
The time has come for the new chassis to be introduced, the parts removed from the original vehicle are being cleaned, renovated and painted ready to be attached to this shiny new platform. |
Much work has been done since the last report. The axles have been cleaned up and in the case of the front one, seriously overhauled. They have now been re-fitted and the steering is being re-connected. The gearbox has been put back in and all of the brakes have been brought back to life. The next few months should see some quite rapid progress, the students are learning a great deal and becoming very proficient in their many varied tasks. |
