Subaqua

The Ampleforth College sub aqua club meets each Tuesday evening in SAC pool. The Club follows the specification of the British Sub Aqua Club and training for the new Ocean Diver qualification comprises of about 20 sessions throughout the year evenly split between pool and theory sessions. Students learn to swim underwater with confidence mastering buoyancy and equipment drills. Rescue skills are taught for the more advanced Sport Diver award after completion of Ocean Diver.

Max starfish.jpgAs well as sheltered water training in the pool the Club visit various open water sites for more advanced training. Usually this takes place at Capernwray or the Farne Islands. In 2003 the Club visited the island of Grenada, we enjoyed some fabulous diving and times together in the tropical weather, all those involved had a great time and gained a huge amount of diving experience.  The same has been true of the most recent trips to Malta (2007- '09 and '11) where a fabulous time was had and the skill of the divers moved on in leaps and bounds. Diving included a WWII wreck in Valetta harbour and the interesting underwater rock formations of Gozo and Comino.  We even managed to visit a statue of the Madonna at 18 metres not something you get to do every day!

Previous expeditions that have taken place include trips to Malta and Jordan in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Anyone interested in learning more about the Club or diving in general should contact Mr Brennan or Mr Hurst.
