Gap Year Projects
Gap Year projects are available in India, Poland, Ghana, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ethiopia, Tanzania, West Africa and Chile - some involving directly linked projects and others which might be arranged and are monitored in part by Mr Dunne.
In Ethiopia, a number helped either with the Missionaries of Charity [nuns of Mother Theresa of Calcutta] or in teaching: in 2006-2007, Michael Cumming-Bruce (O04), Harry Gibson (T05), Julian Muller (H05), Victoria Palazzo (A05), Thomas Sommer (T04), Luke Sumner (J99), Henry Van Der Does De Willebois (J05); in 2007-2008 Laura Criddle (A07), Hugo Phillips (T07) and Galceran de Sarriera (O07) [July-August 2007]. Between April and May 2008, Ashley Ethells-Butler (C07) was in Sodo, Southern Ethiopia teaching English at the Abba Pascal Girls School, a school run by the Capuchin friars.
In Chile, some have helped and shared in the life of the Manquehue Movement. Since 1984, Amplefordians have been helping with the work of the Manquehue Movement in Santiago, Chile, helping in one of the three schools of the Movement and sharing in the community and prayer life of the Manquehue Apostolic Community. They normally go to Santiago for the six month period from March to September in the year after leaving Ampleforth. Thus, between March and September 2008, Rupert Vidovich (J07) is there; between March and September 2007 John Ryan (J06) and James Rudge (C06) were there. James Rudge writes in the Ampleforth Journal [Autumn 2007] of his time there.
In Romania some have helped with orphans. Charlie Pembroke (EW07), Anna Willis (A04) and Laura Willis (A07) worked there with RCHF-UK [Romanian Christian Humanitarian Foundation – UK Support for Romania in July-August 2007. RCHF-UK is supported by Dominic McCann (O02) - he spends much time in Romania helping to run this, and also co-ordinating the gap year programme.
In Zanzibar, Tanzania, Emily Leeming (A07) and Camilla du Boulay (A07) helped at the Francis Maria Libermann School run by the Diocese of Zanzibar, between January and March 2008. This is a school linked with Ampleforth.
There are other gap year possibilities.
