Admissions Policy
Choosing a senior school can be a daunting prospect. It is vitally important that you choose the right school for your child. At Ampleforth, we are willing to talk to families from all backgrounds, irrespective of colour, race, disability or religion to assist in this difficult decision. During this dialogue we hope to be able to get to know you and your child well to assess whether their needs and aspirations fit best with what we can offer. As a Benedictine school, we believe boys and girls from Catholic or Christian families will benefit the most from an Ampleforth education.
At Ampleforth our mission is:
- to share with parents in the spiritual, moral and intellectual formation of their children, in a Christian community with which their families may be joined in friendship and prayer for the rest of their lives.
- to educate the young in the tradition and sacramental life of the Church and to encourage each towards a joyful, free and self disciplined life of faith and virtue.
- to work for excellence in all our endeavours, academic, sporting, and cultural. We ask students to give of their best. We ask much of the gifted and we encourage the weak. Each is taught to appreciate the value of learning and the pursuit of truth.
- to help Ampleforth boys and girls grow up mature and honourable, inspired by high ideals and capable of leadership, so that they may serve others generously, be strong in friendship and loving and loyal towards their families.
The admission of any boy or girl is at the discretion of the Headmaster and is conditional on written acceptance of the Parent School contract, which is printed on the reverse of the Confirmation Form and in the Parents Handbook. The School rules are printed in the termly Blue Book. Copies of each document may be obtained from the Admissions Department. Admission to Ampleforth is usually at 13+ (Year 9) or into the Sixth Form at 16+ (Year 12). Admission into other years is also possible, subject to availability. All aspects of parental enquiries, visits, registration, and entry procedure are the responsibility of the Director of Admissions, who reports to the Headmaster. Prospective parents are invited to arrange an individual visit to the College through the Admissions Department.
