Scholarships

Ampleforth College offers academic, music and all rounder awards and scholarships at 13+ and academic and music awards and scholarships at 16+. An important distinction is drawn between an award, which carries a financial benefit of up to 20% remission of fees, and a scholarship which can be given at any time in a student's career and which does not carry any financial benefit. Those who gain an award will, in addition, automatically be awarded the status of scholar. However, while both awards and scholarships are subject to annual review, the conditions for remaining a scholar are more stringent than those for maintaining an award.

Conditions for all awards

All candidates must be registered for entry to Ampleforth College.

The appropriate application form must have been completed and the application fee paid.

13+ candidates should normally have reached their twelfth birthday and not have passed their fourteenth birthday on 1 September following the examination. For 16+ candidates the respective limits are normally their fifteenth and their seventeenth birthdays.

In assessing the candidates, account is taken of their age and their educational opportunities to date. The means of the parents and the number of children in the family may also be taken into consideration. The number of awards given each year is variable and conditional on candidates reaching a sufficiently high standard.

Parents are asked to notify the acceptance of the award in writing.

Normally awards are tenable for the whole of a student's school career and an award holder is normally given the status of scholar but a scholarship may be suspended or withdrawn at any time if work or conduct ceases to be satisfactory and in certain circumstances, and after due written warning has been given, an award may also be withdrawn.

Awards may be augmented in cases of financial need by the granting of a bursary subject to completion of a statement of parental income. Bursary awards may be subject to periodic review.
