Gap Year Projects

Face-Faw linked Gap Year projects are available on various Face-Faw related projects.

TANZANIA - ZANZIBAR - Francis Maria Libermann School. Since 2006, Ampleforth has established links with this school. Old Amplefordians, especially recent leavers, may apply to help at the school. Must be either two boys or two girls. They would help either from January to March, of from July to September. Accomodation provided, but charged.

TANZANIA - BUIGIRI. This is a village about 30k East of Dodoma City, or seven hours by bus from Dar-es-Salaam. There is a Blind Rehabilitation Centre and a Blind School. It is possible to help for just a few days or for many months (one Amplefordian worked for nine months in 2008-2009).

CHILE - SANTIAGO - Manquehue Apostolic Movement. Since 1983, Amplefordians have lived, prayed and worked with the Manquehue Apostolic Community. Normally from March to September, sometimes at other times. Chosen by the Manquehue Movement. Includes helping in one of the three schools of the Manquehue Movement in Santiago - San Benito, San Lorenzo, San Anselmo - and sharing in the prayer and community life of the Movement.

ETHIOPIA - helping with the Missionaries of Charity. helping with the nuns of the Missionaries of Charity [sisters of Mother Blessed Theresa of Calcutta] in their service of the sick and dying, either for a few weeks or for many months

ETHIOPIA - helping in a school. to help teach in a school in Ethiopia, probably a school run by the Cistercians.

ROMANIA - helping with the poor. helping with the poor and orphanages in Romania, with Romanian Christian Humanitarian Foundation - UK Support for Romania [RCHF-UK]. This may involve a few-week Summer period, or possible a longer stay.  

BRAZIL - helping with young children in the Julia Centre. Established in 2009 in Canacieras, Bahia in northern Brazil to help very poor children aged 6 to 8 years, The Julia Centre provides a creche or pre-school care during the day for children from very poor families. the Julia Centre was established in memory of Julia Thomson, killed in road accident in New York in September 2007 - the sister of Douglas Thomson (H96), William Thomson (H99) and Charlie Thomson (H06).

ALLIANCE FOR INTERNATIONAL MONASTICISM (AIM) - teaching positions in India and Vietnam. AIM currently invites applications to teach English for three to six months in monasteries in India and Vietnam. AIM is a Paris-based Benedictine organisation to serve monasteries in the developing world.

ORDER OF MALTA - working with the poor. the Order of Malta work in many countries, in every continent, with charitable work. It may be possible to volunteer to help.

L'ARCHE COMMUNITY - helping in a community of the handicapped. A L'Arche Community consists of those with learning disabilities and their helpers living together. L'Arche was founded in 1964 by Jean Vanier; today there are 130 L'Arche communities in 30 countries. Possibility of helping in a Community in France for 3 to 6 months.

ROMANIA - Summer Building workshop. A 10-day (roughly) Workshop in a village near Braslov in Romania in August or July 2010 to help renovate abandoned houses - of interest to potential architects, or to others. Organised by Silvia Demeter-Lowe from Romania [four times Romanian national Snowboarding Champion] who spoke at Ampleforth about this on 26 November 2009. 

UKRAINE. teaching English at the Ukrainian Catholic Universtity's 16th Annual English School [the only Catholic University in the former Soviet Union] 1-26 July 2010.  Teaching Ukrainian students and seminiarians "by sharing yourself, your faith, your knowledge of English".  This is Eastern Christianity within the Ukrainian Catholic Church - called The Church of the Martyrs [John Paul II beatified 27 martyrs of Communism during his visit in 2001]. Accomodation provided.
