Tennis - final round-up

26 June 2009

The senior tennis teams enjoyed another successful season and this year there was little interruption from inclement weather or injuries.

The 1st VI finished third in the highly competitive Bradford Tournament with strong perforformances from de Croy and Coysh. There were excellent victories against Hymers' College, Stonyhurst, Pocklington, St Peter's and Giggleswick (many sets being closely fought).  There was a narrow defeat at Bradford Grammar School (4-5) but RGS Newcastle were too strong for all teams on the circuit this year.

The 2nd VI enjoyed an unbeaten season including wins against Hymers, Pocklington, Giggleswick and secured a splendid draw against Bradford Grammar School.

A 3rd VI were also victorious against Bradford Grammar School.

In the Northern Schools U-19 tournament, Moody and Wallace reached the final of the Plate competition before losing 7-10 to Yarm School.

Coysh and de Croy reached the semi-final of the open tournament before losing to RGS Newcastle. In the U-16 event.

Bellhouse and Hornung reached the Quarter final of the Plate before losing 7-10 to The Grange School.

Bonavia and Walker reached the Quarter-final of the main event losing to Bradford Grammar School.

Many boys enjoyed much competitive tennis this Summer, although the 2nd VI were often too strong for the opposition.  They conducted themselves admirably both on and off court in a short but very enjoyable season.

My thanks to Nicola Horn for the administration and support and to Gareth Adams for his advice.
