Science department initiatives

Academic Outreach and Special Relations
Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from St Hilda's School, Ampleforth, enjoyed an exciting morning of conducting experiments in the science department where they investigated different types of chemical reactions and developed their practical skills while having lots of fun. This year the science department has also run a similar session for Year 8 pupils at St. Martin's Ampleforth. The school is keen to make its laboratory facilities available for groups from both local primary and prep schools.
Science Department Partnership with the University of York
The science department has completed its third year of a partnership with the department of Educational Studies at the University of York, contributing to their PGCE training programme for science teachers. During the year two trainee teachers, Dr Ian Fraser and Dr Helen Kyriacou have been working alongside Ampleforth science teachers. The partnership has many benefits for the school as the trainees bring with them fresh ideas to the teaching of science. In addition, through contacts with the tutors from the university, our staff have access to what is current ‘best practice’ in science teaching.
