St John's

House barbequeSt John's is an all-age (13-18) boys' house situated in the centre of the school campus.  Although it is one of the newer school houses, being founded in 1957, St John's is located in one of the older college buildings, recently refurbished throughout.  It is named after the martyr St John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester, who was put to death for resisting Henry VIII's claims over the Church.  The house has accommodation for 65 boys: first years in dormitories of six; second and third years in twin rooms which have ensuite facilities; and sixth formers in their own rooms, many of which have ensuite bathrooms.

St John’s is well known for the eclectic tastes of its boys, whose interests range from playing rugby for the First XV to playing violin with the Orchestra. Food plays an important role in the life of the house; boys cook with matron when there is an opportunity, and academic achievement is rewarded with celebration suppers. For older boys the St John’s Wine Society provides an introduction to grape varieties and food matching. Recent times have seen the establishment of additional reading and discussion groups for those Sixth Form boys preparing for university entrance and interview.

Dr David Moses is the fifth housemaster of St John's and was previously a tutor in the house, though had a year away from the house during which he was Assistant Housemaster in St Oswald’s. He has had many roles at the college, including that of Head of Music Scholars, and Master in charge of The Wine Society. Dr Moses came to Ampleforth as a Teacher of English, and maintains a specialist interest in Medieval English Literature. He is married to Clare, former Matron of St Bede's, and has two children, James and Ethan.

St John’s aims are rooted in the Benedictine community in which we live. The supportive, studious and spiritually active atmosphere gives our students a firm foundation on which to build their school life. We expect every boy to strive to achieve his fullest potential in all aspects of Ampleforth College and encourage self-respect and respect for others.
