St Oswald's

St Oswald's

Situated in the heart of the school with views over the valley, St Oswald’s is currently home to 62 boys aged between 13 and 18 years. The house was founded in 1926 and is one of the four original boarding houses at Ampleforth.  St Oswald’s house started life in the central area of the school before acquiring a more permanent home in Old House in 1933. It was to remain there until 1973 when it moved to its current position of Nevill House.

Our patron is St Oswald of Worcester. He was Archbishop of York from 972 until he died in 992 whilst washing the feet of the poor. We celebrate his life and the achievements of the boys in house on his feast day every February 28th.

Patrick McBeth is the 8th housemaster of St Oswald’s, following on from Fr. Stephen Marwood, Fr. Bernard Boyan, Fr. Adrian Convery, Fr. Justin Price, Fr. Christopher Gorst, Ampleforth’s current Headmaster Fr. Gabriel Everitt and Fr. Chad Boulton.

Patrick is married to Frances and they have been at Ampleforth since 2005.  Patrick teaches in the music department and is Head of Keyboard. Frances is visiting lecturer in music at University College Cork and a regular recitalist. She also teaches in the music department at Ampleforth.  Jo Bird is our Matron, Fr Henry Wansbrough OSB our House Chaplain and Anna Kimmerle our Assistant Housemaster.

St Oswald’s is a place where everyone’s talents and interests are valued and appreciated. We are a warm, open and supportive house, where honesty and trust forms the basis of our values.
